Final proposal

Proposal

I have always appreciated all methods and techniques in art, but have developed a particular affinity to painting and drawing. Being able to work in new and diverse pathways has brought me out of my comfort zone and helped me to narrow my focus down to fine art and visual communication which I plan to explore further during unit 7 of the course. Foundation has given me opportunities to be involved in critiques, collaborate with other students, be involved in a ten week life drawing class and discover artist that now inspire me.

My idea for this project was mostly triggered by an emotion, or rather a few emotions, that are the result of the changes that I have faced this year. I have found myself stuck, unable to move out of a certain mind-set that is quite overwhelming. Someone very close to me has experienced these feelings too, as have many young adults that are forced into making big decisions. It can be crushing to see something that you don’t understand happening to someone that you are very close with, and even more so when you have an idea of how they feel but are unable to help. It’s almost as if the support of others cannot do help and you have to recognise for yourself what it is that is provoking these feelings. For me the relief has been the realisation that there are always other options. It is these feelings that I want to portray in my work during the rest of the course. I have been looking at artists such as Gustav Klimt and Erik Jones both of whom use realism and abstract techniques in their paintings. This is a technique I would like to experiment with during Unit 7. Geoffrey Johnson is a contemporary impressionist painter who draws much of his inspiration from his travels and first-hand observations. From what I have seen he is very good at depicting how small people seem in comparison to large scenes such as big cities. You get the feeling of isolation and loneliness because the silhouettes look almost insignificant amongst the wide open spaces. I would like to create a similar effect in my work so that these feelings can be seen to affect the subject(s) of my paintings/drawings. I thought then, that it would be a good way of incorporating these emotions into my work by looking at how body language and facial expressions could portray different mental states mainly through observational photography. I plan to experiment with scale and technique during this project to develop a size and method that is suitable for my piece.

During Unit 7, I will be able to attend critiques in my pathway where I can present the work I am doing and the thought process behind it. This will give me the opportunity to receive feedback and suggestions that could help the progress of my experiments and the final outcome. I want to try working with different materials on different supports throughout Unit 7, this way I can compare which ones I prefer by the time it comes to doing the final piece(s). I will use my blog for self-reflection to ensure my experimental works all relate to my initial thoughts.

Draft Project Proposal

During A levels it was hard to express myself in the way I wanted. I was advised to stick to acrylic and not pushed to explore or to experiment, hence the reason I joined this course. Someone very close to me has experienced these feelings too, as have many young adults that are forced into making big decisions, however, they have resulted in greater consequences to that person.
